Will Howard began his professional journey in youth development, in 2013, with the Harford County (Maryland) Public School System. After time spent in other career fields, he was encouraged to become a paraeducator, which was something he had no experience in. With uncertainty, he took a leap of faith & committed to a world of new discovery. Through great teachers & mentors, William learned to be inspired by the nature of a child instead of being intimidated by it. His reflections of himself as a struggling student (while supporting other students who struggled) ignited a passion within him to make success obtainable. He found that learning from a student's individuality, allows you to imagine more creative solutions. With this conviction, he began his first school wide mentorship program, for Joppatowne Elementary School. In addition to his initial role as a paraeducator, he has served as a director for Boys & Girls Clubs, managed caseloads of Baltimore City teens/young adults as a workforce specialist & has become an appointed Youth Commissioner for the city of Havre de Grace (for the last 6 years). Because of his dedication to these roles, he’s become known for impactful youth & teen engagement. He has earned the respect of colleagues who seek his perspective & the nuances of his approach. After consideration, he decided to create a company that supports youth & the families/ institutions they're a part of. Thus, the development of WillPower
As a child, I often felt I asked too many questions. My line of questioning would always go (all the way) back to the origins of a matter before I could gain a comprehensive understanding. I've since found value in my inquisitiveness as it affords me freedom to teach at any starting point necessary to reach a mind.
I strive to connect concepts that are more relative to youth (especially those of urban experiences). I understand that although methods vary, the desired results can still be achieved with empathy, strategy & intention. A youth's background should never exclude him/her from the gift of understanding & we must endeavor to make sure comprehension is equitable.
Inequity among youth is often caused by circumstances beyond their control. Environment, along with matters of their heart & mind impact what they believe and achieve. To create paths toward empowerment we must reform gates of information into bridges of understanding.
In 12 years, I’ve learned that resilience is a universal language & it produces wisdom that encourages & inspires. I hope my efforts will encourage resilience in the adolescent journey. I aspire to support youth in areas that build value and instill core competencies needed to become healthy young adults.
Two quotes that guide my creativity are “a teacher never assumes someone knows the answer” & a proverb that states, “with all thy getting, get an understanding.” I’m excited to work with you & help this generation of young people become the best version of themselves.
